For over ten years, our family has participated in the AIDS Walk NY. Honestly, it's closer to fifteen years.

Jeff: In 1986, the first AWNY was held, and 4,500 people walked. They raised $700,000.00.

Lili: Last year, in 2003, 45,000 people walked raising $5.1 million. The money raised goes directly to men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS.

Jeff: So why do we still walk? It is estimated that 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV and AIDS.

Lili: 37 million are adults.

Jeff: 3 million are children under the age of 15.

Lili: In the world, 14,000 new infections occur every day.

Jeff: In the United States, 40,000 new infections occur every year.

Lili: Rutgers Church has committed to supporting, assisting, advocating and educating our community about AIDS.

Jeff: For many years, Rutgers has hosted a support group for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Lili: Rutgers has ongoing discussions, classes and forums to assist us in learning and understanding more about AIDS in our community and throughout the world.

Jeff: We have been honored to be able to host panels of the AIDS quilt in remembrance of those who have died from AIDS.

Lili: Rutgers has made a financial commitment by allocating 1% of the church budget solely for AIDS work and relief throughout the world.

Jeff: Next Sunday, our family will join thousands of New Yorkers in the AIDS Walk 2004.

Lili: We walk to remember all of our friends and family who have died from AIDS.

Jeff: We walk to honor all of our friends and family who live with HIV and AIDS.

Lili: Please, join us in a moment of prayer. On this Mother's Day, we raise up the mothers who live with HIV and AIDS, the mothers who are caregivers for children living with HIV and AIDS, and the mothers who mourn their sons and daughters.

Jeff: Amen.

Return to Moment for Mission Archive
